I know about people who would have never tried any narcotics had they not been introduced to them at an early age, and the story was almost always the same – the supplier, looking for new clients, either bullied or conned the victim in one way or another to try something "just once" with the result of getting the victim to believe that he/she just could not live without stronger and more expensive drugs.

Earlier in life the lesser drugs, like MJ, is actually the gateway as it begins the addiction chain reaction. Introduction to it in later adulthood usually does not result in that sort of behavior. I believe that it might have something to do with our physiology during our growing up period and while we are young adults vs our physiology as mature adults.

Just my not-so-humble opinion.

I'm still in college, and I've seen people be pressured into using illegal substances. I remember the first time this kid tried marijuana, and about a year later, he moved on to bigger and more powerful substances. I speak to a lot of potheads every day, and they say that they aren't addicted to the substance itself, but the feeling of "being high". I myself have never tried it, but I know that if this kid hadn't of been introduced to the gateway drug marijuana, he wouldn't move all the way up to the more powerful drugs I assume he is on now.

What about the rest of those potheads who didn't go on to using cocaine or crystal meth? What explains their behavior?

Introduction to a narcotic does not guarantee permanence of use. We have about 10% of the adult/teen population that has tried cocaine. And about 1% uses it regularly. In other words, people might experiment or try different things if they are compelled by peers or salesmanship, but they're going to have to be predisposed to stick to it or find it interesting. Consider most people's first experience with tobacco or wine or even, as a less obvious example, coffee. These things are often considered "acquired tastes". It takes time to overpower the nauseous sensations that these products can create and derive pleasure from their use. For some people it takes less time. That's far more often a genetic factor which determines the timing issue than social behavior in the manner of a "gateway" substance.

Well, from what I have seen, no one seems to do those big-time drugs alone, it's all within a group setting. This goes for everywhere. I remember when I was a stock broker for a little while that the whole office would encourage using cocaine, so I believe group-settings have a lot to do with it. However, it is extremely rare for anyone to do cocaine and meth and all of those big-time drugs without experiencing alcohol, marijuana, and nicotine.

Which still does not explain the theory as a "gateway". Not everyone who uses cocaine continues to do so, nor does everyone who uses marijuana experiment with it either. In fact the vast majority of people do not. It's still largely determined by individuals. likewise, I would find it surprising that someone, in our present culture anyway, would sit around and use cocaine for recreational purposes in private. Lots of people don't drunk alone either. It's a social convention. Since social conventions are often built around people sharing mutual interests, it wouldn't be surprising that people who liked to use cocaine would associate with others who do so.

I've only been on the earth for a little bit, but I would have to say no. Science does show that addiction to one thing is never really cured by treatment, only replaced by another addiction. The fact that some abusers of alcohol, nicotine, etc., go on to become addicted to other drugs does not prove the establishment of "gateway drugs". Correlation does not imply causation.

Well, I don't know. I don't think that you need it to be proven by medical doctors and professionals for it to be official. All I know is this:

Friend tries marijuana. Friend likes feeling of "being high". Friend tries drug again and again. Friend's body gets used to the feeling of being high so friend needs to move on to more powerful drugs.

Alright, you're right that it doesn't necessarily mean that you are going to do cocaine if you take marijuana, but if you think about it, it's like outgrowing a system. Alcohol, marijuana, and nicotine, they all give people a relaxed state till a certain point. Sooner or later, they have a tolerance for this feeling, and they have to move on to cocaine and meth, which is the next level, so if you look at it like that, then it is a gateway drug.

It is officially proven by medical doctors and professionals.

That the entire concept of "gateway" drugs is incorrect.

That still says more about the people than the abused substances of choice.

Because one has to "go underground" as it were to get weed, it does transition into other illegal drugs much more easily than say drinking beer or smoking a fag.

That's the point though. If you didn't have to go underground there isn't a transmission point. The gateway theory implies that using any of these would create a desire for stronger simulations of its own accord. That's more of a function of the individual than the drugs themselves. And if you separate the availability of the one from the other, as in places like Holland, the percentages who have access to harder substances like heroin drops, as does their use. It's not the chemicals that are the problem. It's the people.

No its not, taking any drugs will mess you up equally.
