No. It's not like VHS, at all.
Things are certainly fluid, especially considering the strong comeback of the vinyl album.
Your link has been added to the Reconstitution blogroll.
I still remember when Blockbuster had their Laserdisc section and Virgin had their minidiscs…
As for DVDs, I don't plan on switching my collection over anytime soon. Only have a few VHSs left, and luckily, no Betamax.
I think that since DVDs are disc based, they wont really be phased out, or at least, not anytime soon, although it annoys me that blu-ray cases are a different size.
First there was the hard plastic "Tube" invented by Bell, then the flat recorded disc (first hard plastic then vinyl) which wire recordings began giving a run for the money and was actually beat out by magnetic tape which turned into 8-track cartriges and then cassette magnetic tape which now has been replaced by the CD which is slowly being edged out by MP3 onto flash drives.
In the video arena, first there was the highly flamable cellulose which has been replaced by sinthetic film which is being pushed out by Magnetic tape and the DVD(Blu-Ray is just another DVD format like VHS was to Beta).
I think that both video and sound will be ultimately outdone by the silicon chip, eventually.
Just my not-so-humble opinion. B)
Good question. Yes, I think DVDs will eventually be phased out for something else. Technology changes all the time. I have video on demand on my TV, so I don't have to rent videos from the video store anymore. I think video will become more "on-line" just as music has, and the actual DVDs will be phased out.
Interesting blog.
I'm about to drop out of the whole Madison Avenue driven gotta-have-gadget-getting-game.
I got a goddam computer with a floppy drive and then I needed one with Windows, then one with '97, '98', '2000', then Xp, then Vista, then '7', then I needed a CD Burner, then a memory stick, then a Laptop, then a notebook, then wireless, then a cell phone, then a blackberry, then a buetooth, then a Boom Box, then a Walkman, then a CD player, then a iTunes, then a x-box, then a digital TV , then flat screen, then High Def, then a Blu ray, then surround sound,
WTF is this all about? Each one of those things is supposed to make me the happiest person in the world, or, at least improve the quality of my life, but in reality each one just made my life more hectic, my relationships more shallow, my basement full of obsolete crap, and my wallet flatter.
I listed you Jay, and I'll hang around and take a look see.
In the big picture,
I'm trying to regain some personal integrity and become a real human again. I try to resist the control of Churches, political propagandists, the incidious entertainment industry, Cable "news", and the most infectious of all, Madison Avenue. I'm not buying anymore crappy gadgets.
I see a day in the not too distant future, where videos will be released on very small cards that can be plugged directly into a large screen or attached to a pair of glasses for personal 3D.
Yeah, Blu Ray is the new big thing. Watching a DVD nowadays on an HD tv is like watching VHS. The quality is just so much better with Blu Ray.
If you want to be more human, then drop the liberal stance and begin to think for yourself . . .
I think DVD's time is limited as the technology is moving so fast. Video had a long run because there was nothing better to replace it until DVD's came along a couple of decades later but we have blu-ray with its greater capacity waiting in the wings ready to usurp DVDs.
Think for myself, like in….. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/liberal …..Liberal thought?
I own too many DVDs to let my collection become obsolete. If anyone even thinks of releasing a computer without a DVD drive (those underpowered netbooks aside) it will fail horribly. DVDs can be backed up, they can be burned and the image and sound quality don't degrade with use. They are here to stay.
Well, of course! Most folks associate Liberals with the Progressive Movement . . . you know, those who think you are too stupid to think for yourself. Problem is, modern day liberals do not think for themselves . . . and that is exactly why we are now burdened with a Marxist President!
Oy Vay!
Wait… how did this topic become political?
Obviously because DVDs are a liberal conspiracy plot.
Eventually something new will come along that will fully replace them. Blu-ray is generally backward compatible and is basically the same technology. I haven't seen a huge need to make that step-up as a result.
Video on demand type technology may be involved, as might be simply storing the movies themselves on a computer or portable movie player (like an Ipod). But I don't foresee the format going anywhere and becoming totally useless for quite some time simply because the quality and ready availability is so high and most consumers are accustomed to the model of watching movies in their homes via some machine whenever they wish. When movie rights are easier to purchase and distribute in mass, then DVDs will probably be replaced by massive databases.
