It depends on the school, but most of them are the same wage. It is ridiculous. Highschool and grade schools are ridiculous, but manageable. Colleges are just out there.
I totally agree with you J-bone.
College education prices have
a) a much lower level of built in government subsidies than primary education
b) a much MUCH higher amount of individual gain relative to positive externalities.
In other words, it's expensive because the government doesn't help offset the cost (it's expensive when the government does this too, but it's often less visible) and it's expensive because it's kind of supposed to be. There's less of a public good involved in people going to college to further individual gains and education than there is in having a broadly educated general public.
To answer your question directly;
They are too expensive only to those who want a free ride . . .
