By definition a cult is "a religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its members often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of a authoritarian, charismatic leader." (American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language – 2009)
Freemason, first of all, has no one person that could be considered an authoritarian, charismatic leader. They do have a "chain of command" (so to speak) wherein one person is elected to be the head of the organization (I could be wrong but I think he is called the Grand Master) although as I said, this is an elected position and not a position where his leadership is forced upon anyone.
Also I do not consider them to be a religion. They claim to believe in a supreme being who I believe they call the Grand Architect although I believe I read something that stated that there are in fact atheist freemasons.
Aside from that, I would certainly not call it an extremist organization.
Well, that is my two or three cents worth.

We are not a cult!
But I can tell everone what we are!
FREEMASONRY is a charitable, benevolent, educational and religigious society. Its principles are proclaimed as widely as men will hear. Its only secrets are in its methods of recognition and symbolic instruction. If you need to know more then join us to find out more .
Just out of curiosity Darrell, how far off was I in regards to the Grand Lodge's "chain of command"?

So if you sling enough mud, some may stick to the wall. Please use your own mind when considering the source of these so called conspiracy theories.

Otter you assessment of Masonry's 'chain of command" is over simplistic but close. The fact is the Grand Master is elected and changes every year or two depending on your jurisdiction. No one man speaks for all Freemasonry or Freemason.
As far as Masonry being a cult. It does not pass the litmus test of cults. Cults are easy to get into and hard to get out. Freemasonry is just the opposite, hard to get into and easy to get out.
I am a Freemason and I sometimes read appalling statements by individuals who are not members claiming to be more knowledgeable than those that are. And Freemasons rarely answer their critics, there by letting them say what ever they want and foist wild theories.
Freemasonry is an easy target for this reason.
I beg to differ with Darrell though. We do have secrets and there is something to protect. For some it is a lifetime journey to find the secrets and some may never find it.

I don't think so. I think it's just like a fraternity, except they aren't open too-much with their traditions.
I dont know. There are a lot of conspiracy theories surrounding the masons. There must be some truth to it.
Since I know quite a few Freemasons, (no, I am not one) I do believe that they are not now and never have been a cult.
Just my not-so-humble opinion.B)
I do not think they are a cult and here is why.

I agree Darrell.
Most of what I learned about Freemasons and about the Grand Lodge is what I learned when I was a member of the DeMolay organization.
