My concern over comments was not based on the deletion of useless and obvious comment spam, which I support. My concern was that far too often comments were posted and deleted on the basis of their content and were in fact commentary rather than uselessness. Without any transparent clear process for having done so, but with some obviousness that they were being deleted for some arbitrarily enforced comment approval system. This limited the range of commentary and discourse and may have dissuaded participation to a smaller group of commenter. If this was the intended purpose, the solution of requiring a registered commenting may well resolve the issue to your satisfaction.
My concern was that a site which is based or centered around open debate should not be doing so at all. Some sort of comment feedback controlled by users themselves (and not administrators) was probably sufficient to moderate comments. So while it is possible that the registry system will free up such resources on the part of users and limit comment spam, that was never my problem.
