Do employees have the right to check their email at work?

Yes I believe so. All other sites could be blocked, but when it comes to email, it could be important and since when does anyone have the right to take that privilege away from someone?
Have a right? No. Can it be stopped? No.
Why would they not have the right to do so?
Yea, what if it's an important email or something?
3 reasons:
1) If they're on company time, then the employer gets to decide what is expected of them during that time based on their job description, in which it can clearly be agreed upon that e-mail is not part of their privileges.
2) Security reasons on company owned computers.
3) If we start calling that a 'right' then the term has lost all meaning, so in defense of our other rights I insist that we have a little bit higher standards for what are to be perceived as 'rights'
Guess I didn't think of it as being on the employee's time, I suppose you make a strong argument there.
I guess then we have to wait after work. It is the company's time so they do not care about anything to do with our private lives.
Okay, kids, here is the old fart again! Back in the day we did not have computers and cell phones and such, and we all got our work done just fine without all that fancy-schmancy stuff.
Here is the serious bottom line on this; The computer at your work belongs to your employer and not you, therefore your employer has the final say about what you can do with his computer.
Just my not-so-humble opinion.
I agree with Andrew and papa. Employer's have a right to expect you to do your job while they are paying you money. So, while some may get the privilege of doing so, it certainly isn't a right.
Fair enough.
