Do we really have the power to overthrow our government?

I really don't think so, which is scary.
I think we absolutely do. We as a whole can stop our governement if we wanted to. All americans could stand up and say "I'm not paying a cent more in taxes thanI did last year" or "None of our children are showing up for the planes taking them to Iraq" or any number of things. There is however, a difference between the ability of Americans to overthrow or stop the government; and the infrastructure, desire, and drive to do so.
So while I think we as citizens are powerful enough to stop the government, I don't think we would ever be organized enough to do so…..
If they keep taking away the guns we won’t, and we lack organization.
An armed citizen is just that . . . a citizen.
An unarmed citizen is a subject to their government.
If you do not stand up and fight for your own freedom and liberty, then you will be just another subject to your government.
We Americans have the Constitutional right to replace our government at our own discretion.
Just my not-so-humble opinion. B)
As I said before, I agree with this. But like pusty said we do not have the organization to muont even a major sit-in against our government. I think that today, in 2009 we have too many members of the population who just don't care enough to fight back or raise their voices. If 20% of the people in America, 60+ million people stood up and said "no more higher taxes… enough with taxes" (and im just using tax as an example) the government would pat their heads and say "silly people, you HAVE to pay your taxes". Most Americans today I think are willing to deal with continual small angering changes. In small doses you can get the lambs to drink their medicine. I think all our current politicians are too smart to try and hit us all with a big dose.
"People should not fear their Government… Government should Live in fear of their people"
~alan moore (even though moore is pretty crazy, its a decent enough quote)
Also, do you feel the need to overthrow our current government? I know alot of people aren't happy with the current administration but is it necessary to rebel right now? President Obama isn't really able to enact most of what he based his campaign platforms on; whether it's from Republicans blocking his attempts at lawmaking, or infighting in the Democratic party being so fractured they won't even stand behind their own candidate.
Eitherway 3 years from now he will probably have the same amount done and honestly he'll probably be considered a caretaker president and will most likely get voted out next time around.
I wouldn't go moving to Canada yet is what I'm saying. I think he'll probably be remembered as a liberal president who served his four years and moved on. Anyone aside from papadawg, PT447, and I remember President Carter?
Question;
To "lord tiberius" . . . What did you do on April 15th 2009? Have you not heard the quiet protest of the Taxed Enough Already party's?
I peruse the internet and do a lot of reading at a lot of blogs and I see a wave of discontent building to tsunami strength all over this country. This "overthrow" of our government will not be a violent one, but it will be decisive in force and nature. The silent majority is getting very angry and will not tolerate the "progressive" movement any longer. Likewise with the currant political party system, Americans are seeing that it is them – the not elected ones – who have been calling the shots recently and not the people and that is waking them up.
Obama promised change. He will see change, but not the change to a socialist governing system that he wanted to install, it will be a change back to what the founding fathers of this nation originally intended – A constitutional republic form of government that puts liberty and freedom first and foremost with an understanding that with this form of governance comes the acknowledgment of personal responsibility.
We are now living in a very historic time in this country.
Just my not-so-humble opinion. B)
Exactly. We can't overthrow the government because it would be absolutely impossible to control millions of people and get them to do something about it.
I guess the short answer to your question is that on April 15th I had already long since paid my taxes, and no I haven't heard of the "Taxed Enough Already" party whether its response was quiet or not. But do you think the silent majority is really representative of an actual majority of Americans? or a majority of people angry enough to actually give a damn about the state of the country around them. I think that yes if you look at the percentages of people who are upset with the President versus those who support him than you definitely have an angry majority, at least in the past few months it's become a majority, silent or otherwise.
BUT I'm not sure it's really a good lsice of the American public, I think it's a good slice of the politically active "pundits" who feel the need to make a change. I think most Americans are still in a "don't care" mode. So while the tsunami looks really big from the political standpoint I think you're going to need more than the say 20-30% of overall Americans who are actually angry at the current administrations abilities or lack therein.
I think, to make a solid change through non-violent means, and I really hope you're right in your non-violent overthrow statement, you're going to need a solid protest of literally 60-75% of ALL Americans. We're talking like a grand scale of 200+million people.
So I guess my question to you in return is what form do you think this overthrow will take? You've specified non-violent means which is great. And I know you are an ex-military man, so as much as you obviously dislike our current President I'm going to assume the idea of assassination is a hideous to you as it is to me. Do you expect the President to step down in the face of an overwhelming negative public opinion rating? Because frankly we've had negative ratings on Presidents worse than Obama's. I don't want to point the Bush finger, but his numbers were low. Carter also had incredibly poor public opinion ratings and both of them remained president through their terms. If you're talking impeachment what kind of charges are we basing this on.
Can you prove he is a socialist? a communist? a Kenyan? I mean like prove in the full sense of proof, like white stains on the blue dress kind of proof.
And I'm not trying to poke fun when I ask these questions, but you say theres a tidal wave of angered Americans, I just want to know what form it will take.
Yeah, I’m sorry, but no one gives a damn anymore.
First of all not enough people are aware of the what’s going on, and even if they are, most don’t have the time or guts to stand up to it. Nowadays everyone has their own issues that they think are the most important to the world, poverty, the environment, hating white people, hating minorities, breat cancer, woman’s rights etc. that the nation hasn’t realized that their own government is robbing them their freedom, and frankly you’ll need something huge to revive the nation.
Almost makes me glad I already am living in Canada.
Actually what am I saying, I am a proud Canadian, sorry about that.
I lived through the Kennedy assassination, also MLK and RFK. Do not want to go there again. I have posted before on that subject and believe me, it is a waste of time. Killing people to fix a political "misdeed" only compounds the original problem and brings up new ones.
The political overthrow of those currently in national public office will be accomplished by the voting public assisted by the new and emerging "third party" and independent politicians within their respective states. These states will invoke states rights by calling for a constitutional convention to assess and put forth certain constitutional amendments which will literally put a stop to and possibly reverse the current headlong dive into socialism that this nation is now in.
As for the current POTUS, yes he is a Marxist. By his own words (you can find his speeches on youtube) he sought out all the socialist and Marxist professors and activists while in college so that he could gain their "wise counseling". Then take a look at his cabinet, and all his "Czars" (for lack of a better word) that he has surrounded his Presidency in.
As for April 15th of 2009, I was part of the TEA party protest that was attended by well over a hundred thousand people nation wide. These protests are still going strong as there were almost a million people gathered at the DC Mall on the fourth of July this year. We are all over the internet and you are more than welcome to join us as our numbers grow each and every day as the voting public wake up to the fact that what Obama and his cronies are giving out in the name of "change" really is not the change that they thought he would bring about once elected.
FYI – I attended some classes at the University of Hawaii at the same time his mother was there. It is my personal opinion that he is a U.S. citizen and was not born in a foreign nation.
You seem like an intelligent sort. Do you realize that only 30% to 60% of all eligible voters actually do vote? That will never amount to over 200 million people – except in Communist China, of course . . .
And PLEASE do not get me started on "the Peanut Farmer President" as I believe that it was basically his policies that have led to this current wave of terrorism against the U.S. among other things!
B)
Canada is a lovely place, but do please explain to me, when I visited there for a school trip years ago I found alot of the meat tasted like hotdog… seriously, and I'm not trying to be an insulting ass, I'm making light of it. But even the steaks tasted like hotdog?!? Has Canada secretly genetically engineered the Sabrett Hotdog Cow? Because if so, I don't know why you guys haven't marketed it. It would really really endear Canada to alot more americans!
Also, and as a totally unrelated side note. I visited Epcot center in Disney world 2 years ago and visiting all the countries was alot of fun. All the workers wear "native" (right) clothes of their home areas… So we get to Canada, and everyone (of course) is wearing flannel shirts, jeans, and timerland boots….. even the girls!!! And I was thinking, "come on…. really? everyone in canada is dressed like Al from "Home Improvement"", couldn't disney put a bit more historical effort into a native garb for Canada?
I absolutely know that only 30-60% of eligible voters actually do vote. And I think it's one of my standpoints on why a non-violent revolution of non-voting means would never occur. I do agree completely that if the masses of active voters seek it then President Obama will absolutely not be elected again, which I assume is your explanation of the third party use of the election system. And wow if that happens, great! I'd love to see a third party president elected from roots that relfect the actual desire of americans. Frankly I don't think that either Republican or Democrats have enough of our best interests at heart.
Also, I WAS unaware that the new age TEA parties stood for Taxed Enough Already. So you say that there are over 100,000 members strong nation wide, I'm not sure if you read my post on obesity being linked to cancer but I did some quick math and 100,000 Americans relates to 1/30 of 1% of the population, which unfortunately is far too small to make a huge political difference.
I stand by my statement that a non-violent overthrow would require over 200,000,000 marching protesting americans. Though if you're willing to wait the 3 more years till election day 2012 you may well get your wish through standard means.
No I won't get you started on Carter, I was really only using him as an example of past Presidents with piss-poor approval ratings. I know he was the monster of democracy.
Ha, yeah I could see Disney doing that, I think most Canadians like the stereotype of being hard-working, and a very cold nation. I’m glad you are aware that no, Canadians dress and act like Americans, we have stereotypes like we love beer, hockey and Tim Hortons which keeps us together. We also love to laugh at the ignorant Americans who know very little about Canada. For example my friend and I where talking with a girl on Wikianswers, and my friend said that he was from Canada, and that all he does all day is go dog-sledding and rabbit hunting when he’s not huddled in front of a fire in his igloo. This girl from Kentucky totally believed us, that this is how all Canadians are. Type in talking to americans on youtube and you’ll see Rick Mercer interview Americans about ridicoulous questions about Canada.
Moving on, Papadawg I have signed up for one of the groups dedicated to stopping the communist regime that is sweeping America, they e-mail me constantly and honestly I don’t have the time to take action, it seems to have gained very little momentum, now a) I am informed b) I am concerned, but I still haven’t acted on this. So how do you plan to revive a nation that isn’t a) or b)?
Now please continue in your push, I don’t mean to be totally negative, I’m just saying, you have a long ways to go.
So Pusty (believe me, I would have chosen a different sounding cybername, LOL) please tell this "dumb American" just how a Canadian who lives in an igloo and does nothing but wear Timberland boots and goes dog sledding and rabbit hunting in his flannel shirt all day help the United States turn around our political landscape?
Do not mistake my warped sense of humor for ridicule . . .
Just asking. B)
Oh Ye Of Little Faith . . . Pardon my optimism, but we are definitely growing!
I did not say that we were ever going to have a full two-thirds of the entire population behind us or even with us. FYI – no political party ever does have the full support of the "masses".
As I write this I have already heard the screams of anger over the Internet about how Pelosi and her cronies have literally ignored MILLIONS of people who have written, called and emailed their House of Representatives member to plead, beg and warn them to vote AGAINST the Obama(doesn't)care so-called health-care reform bill that will initially cost the American taxpayer one-point-two-trillion dollars, but voted for it anyway. In the next two years I predict that there will be an enormous turnover in the House of Representatives.
We will win. Period.
For all who read this I suggest that you Google this; GOOOH
There you will see just the tip of the iceberg that will sink the incumbents that are ignoring their constituents.
Forgive my little faith, but I'm going to play a numbers game again. 100,000 members of the TEA association after 1 year of campaigning, gives you 3 years left to make up some major headway on you body count. If you consider the movement growing in size like say a virus you could have 300,000 by next year this time, say 900,000 by the year after that, and say 10-15million the third and final, year 2012 election year. It's a fair number of people… but thats assuming TEA spreads like a virus and contacts people who WANT in. Again I reference the inaction of americans who a)like the current administration and b)just don't care about any administration.
I'm not trying to be overly pessimistic about your ideals. And if there is a huge turn-over in the House then I think we will have seen it because organized Americans will have gotten off their bottoms and gotten it done. What I would hate to see is for Americans to make any major decision and then sit back and say "whew… we did it!!! alright, when's NASCAR on? That was tough work……" Get my drift?
And of course you will win papadawg, given enough time and effort the republicans will take the house and the presidency again, in a 2 party system you couldn't in good faith expect the democrats to hold control "forever", soon or later the other party always gets back in.
I have a question for you Papadawg. Let’s say that a massive victory for the people of the United States was won, and the a third party gets in. Do you think that this party will not get drunk with power? Is there a party that will look solely towards the needs of the American people? Remember, this was a question not a statement.
I am a sophomore in highschool and I have always wondered about this question. I mean, ever since I learned about our rights in fourth grade, I never understood why people complained about our government. If we feel that our government is abusing its power, why haven't we done anything? We have the power to overthrow it if we feel that it is correct. Nowadays, it almost seems like we don't have any say in what our government does. I think people should be more aware of their rights. When Bush was president, everyone complained about his ideas and the way he did things. He was President for 8 years! If people really didn't like him, they would've done something about it. I
Mispellings really throw off your credibility.
Okay. So even if we all protest and rally, the politicians are still in control. What exactly can we do against the most powerful people in America? Wave banners at them. They would just laugh and go back to their private jets.
No one likes President Obama because no one likes change. No one likes the fact that this guy is trying to fix this whole dog-eat-dog perspective. We can't live like that.
We didn't have the power to do anything. It was the politicians who were on the payroll who would determine his fate.
oh darn he spelled something wrong….we shall cut off his hands and throw him in the pit of no intelligence ! give me a break!
Obama's popularity has hit new lows and at the present time Bush's numbers were much better than Obama. In fact, the latest Rasmusen polls report he is one of the most unpopular president's in our country's history. This administration is attempting to buy everyone off and push through this healthcare reform bill that will only cost more money and make it more difficult for those who are insured to hold on to their policies as those rates are expected to skyrocket. The thought of being imprisoned if you refuse to buy insurance, mind you the government may dictate what is acceptable, is beyond unbelievable in America! I fear we have dark days ahead of us and I'm so angry with everyone who voted this guy in when it was painfully obvious what his intentions were…..guess what…you can't always believe what politicians say….please do your research prior to voting….or do us all a favor and don't vote!
