Im 19, and i hate all that hard metal crap and that stupid rap. I listen to any other kinds of music as long as they dont have excessive cussing and bad language. Country and celtic are good kinds of music. I also like to listen stuff from phantom of the operah. I sometimes listen to techno. Even calming music on youtube is a good thing for every once in a while.

i think that you should take the time and talk to some the teenagers who do listen to rap and hip-hop. Its entertainment and besides that its true that most of the artists have a positive message and know what they are actually talking about..i listen to rap and hip-hop but that doesn't mean I'm a bad kid.. i agree with the person that said we all make our own choices.. just because i listen to the music doesn't mean I'm going to go do whatever they are talking about or describing in their lyrics..i listen to it for enjoyment purposes

I agree, i hate it when parents blame video games and music videos for THEIR childrens' bad behavior. they need to start acting like parents instead of watching it all go down hill!

Correlation of aggressive personalities is not discussed therein usually. It's sort of a chicken or the egg problem common to a lot of psychological research. Were people already violent and sought out violent forms of expression? Or were they exposed to violent forms of expression and sought out violence action more easily or commonly as a result? Lots of people are exposed to violent media and do not act violently. There are also plenty of forms of violent "media" that most people would not ever consider as a basis for censorship which are oft claimed, usually erroneously, by people who commit violent acts (the holy scriptures of their religion as one example).

To place a fairly high margin of negative influence upon the vile music video or playing too much Doom as a kid is to incompletely understand what it is that makes us actually act out with violence (presumably this applies to our sexual acts as well).

No, if you truly are a good person you will be able to distinguish between real life and reality, just like video games.

According to an article "The Influence of Media Violence on Youth" by psychology researchers and professors at various universities, "Short-term exposure increases the likelihood of physically and verbally aggressive behavior, aggressive thoughts, and aggressive emotions. Recent large-scale longitudinal studies provide converging evidence linking frequent exposure to violent media in childhood with aggression later in life, including physical assaults and spouse abuse."

However, I feel that music is a personal experience, and children may listen to and enjoy certain genres of music based on their beats, chords, etc., and not necessarily their words. It may be that the music video is to blame for the rise in childhood aggressive tendencies.

Not really. That's still an entire genre. It might be useful to say that there are specific messages included that could be less than socially optimal in music. Of almost any variety. I've found country music to be often about as socially repulsive as much of popular rap music. I don't go around declaring that we should censor it. Labeling any specific genre or stylistic choices as negative music, and by extension declaring a need to censor or control it is not that productive. Effectively, getting rid of gangsta rap got us into the current trend of senseless nonsense (essentially corporate rap) instead.
