I remember discussing this in school. What happened to the empire? They used to be the big boys in town.
Empires rise and empires fall. The only thing that remains is the people.
A few hundred years ago, thirteen upstart colonies severely weakened the empire of Britain by successfully winning a war for their independence.
Cromwell took care of the rest. What emerged was the "United Kingdom" that is now represented by a Queen. Today, thanks to the European Union, that kingdom represented by a Queen is not so united anymore. Those in Parliament are mostly spineless Socialists who are cowtowing to even the likes of Muammar Quadiffi (I know I spelled it wrong) for his limited supply of oil.
Yup. The U.K. has weakened.
Jared, do you live on this site? You seem to be the first to respond to every question.
Just curious.
It doesn't look any lower in the water or any closer to Europe physically speaking.
Life happened, people caught up.
Hmm. Depends what you mean by 'decline'. In terms of international impact and relevance then certainly the answer is YES. The Empire is just a vague memory spoken of in history class and pretty much forgotten after that. Put it this way- you'd be hard pressed to find anyone here who knows the full words to "Rule Britannnia" apart from the "Britons never, never shall be slaves" bit. (most of us don't even know the words to the National Anthem).
@Sun Tzu. You may have inadvertantly touched upon another subject there mate, namely our relation with Europe, or the EU to be more precise. This causes immense political controversy and is, in part, a consequence of our international decline.
Saying that, I'd still rather live here than anywhere else despite our myriad social problems. We just need to face up to who we are, what we are and what we stand for in the World.
@Jason. I probably could have posted something a little better if you had elaborated on the subject. Interesting website by the way :0)
lol pawadawg. thank you for your concern. i keep up with technology, so every time a post is published, i'm alerted.
I don't think it was inadvertent personally. The obvious factor of Britain's global sway and importance was a far less important matter to discuss than its current political ties, and relative independence from, the politics of the Continent as a whole.
