Probably not. They are all probably having cocaine for breakfast.
For someone who is in a college, you are very uneducated! Cocaine is not produced in that country!
The Poppy plant, which produces the base for Heroin (through Opium) is one of the very few plants that can grow and flourish in the harsh environment and soil in that part of this planet. That fact alone makes it one of the most popular crops for farmers in that region. FYI – Opiates or Opium based products are widely used in modern medicine world-wide.
Our efforts in that country has been to introduce new farming techniques to grow different crops that an provide a better living for that country. Progress in that area is slow but steady as centuries of tradition have to be overcome. We may not see a lot of progress as yet, but progress is actually being made. One thing that may help is the recent discoveries in genetic-based treatments for cancers as that would greatly reduce the need for Opiate based drugs thereby making it much less profitable to grow the Poppy plant.
Just my not-so-humble opinion. B)
I read that the counter-narcotics movement is lacking a long-term strategy.
I didn't say that they were produced in that country. The United States has the highest drug consumption rates than in any other countries. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that we are the largest producer, because we aren't.

Wrong again, Jared! The U.S. does NOT have the highest drug consumption rate in the world (although there are some people who desperately want everyone to believe that!).
Communist China does, followed closely by India and Russia, respectively, then France and Spain. The U.S. is tenth in drug consumption behind Mexico, even!
Not at all. We can't control the drugs coming into our own country. We will never be able to control another country's drug problem.
Plus it has been shown that our troops are guarding the poppy fields because that is how the international bankers who fund the war make money.
It sure seems to have been rather profitable for a few narco-lords who are allied within the Afghani government or leadership.
If we assume that's what it was supposed to do, then sure.
