Is life in prison for juveniles cruel and unusual?

Yes I believe so. Often times, the youth does not actually understand the consequences and implications of their actions. Jumping to conclusions at a young age is not the proper way in handling the situation.
Juvies still did something wrong. I know if I did something wrong, I would expect to be punished for it. Just because you're young, it does not excuse you from the consequences of your behavior.
Since I am an ex cop, and I have very definite views on Juvenile heinous crimes, I will say only this; If a Juvenal commits a crime that an adult would spend the rest of their life behind bars for, then let the punishment stand the same for all.
I have seen more in my career than most folks, and I know for a fact that a good portion of these "kids" know exactly what they were doing. They grow up at a very young age on the big city streets!

Yeah I agree with you, but to be thrown away in jail for life at such a young age in different then later on in your life.
Yeah that is because the only life and opportunities they could see was from the streets.
i think parents should be held responsible as well, say little johnny does crime x that as an adult would send him to jail for life. work it out of him and seek the help he needs the rest work out of the parents, they failed as parents and didnt seek help if they needed it but over all they as parents failed
I agree with you papadawg. These kids all learn their habits at a very young age. If you grew up robbing grocery stores, when you get older, your going to move on to bigger and better things. These children need to have a wake-up call, and that's the detention centers.
I think you should tell your parents that and see what they say.
tell my parents why? ? ? for one my mother has taken full responsibility for my actions groowing up, and for two even if she didnt like it it would still be my opinion….i am going to be a parent and would not mind being held reponsible for my child's actions, i see no problem here its a job you take on when you decide to have consensual sex. Also i would just like to point out that your snde comments do not make you look any smarter than the ppl whos credibility you are trying to compromise over simple misspellings. i think you might be rude ..that or your having a bad day and thus leaving rude comments for ppl with out actually dicussing the topic at hand

Of course it may be cruel to a not fully-developed minor to imprison them, but think about everybody else. In order for society to be safe, juveniles should be behind bars, and not in our streets. Also, there needs to be deterrents such as punishment to stop any more criminals from committing crimes.
