FDR and his "New Deal" politics sold Social Security to a desperate population looking for some sort of way out of the very dilemma that he had put them in as a SUPPLEMENT (look up that word in the dictionary for its true meaning) to their own personal retirement nest eggs.
Once the "Baby Boomers" entered the work force the Social Security "purse" swelled to a very large size and JFK and then LBJ let Congress get their filthy mitts on it for having them pass favorite (NASA) legislation and to fund LBJ's Viet Nam fiasco.
We use ours (my wife's and mine) as it was originally intended – supplementing our retirement investments.
In my Not-So-Humble-Opinion, it is not a Ponzi scheme – or it wasn't until corrupt politicians got their hands on it.
No it's not! In a ponzi scheme you have to be fooled into joining. With SS I am a sucker who pays in but what get out, and I don't have a choice in the matter!
