I really don't think so. I think they are way too lenient.

Without the FDA in the food arena, it would be chaos in the meat industry.
However, they sometimes make the drug industry research and development costs go through the roof and that is more often than not passed on to the consumer – unfortunately most people who use those drugs are senior citizens who can little afford to pay those costs.
papadawg, you usually advocate a much less invasive stance towards what the government should and shouldn't regulate in our lives. What is your stance on the usage of FDA controlled substances such as marijuana, lsd, heroine etc etc?
Since we obviously need regulation on food to control bacteria levels and quality of meat, what about the FDA making rules about what "drugs" we can put into our bodies? Too much control or not enough?

First thing you need to do is talk to a geneticist about what your so-called "recreational" drugs actually do to your reproductive system and your DNA before you challenge me on this particular topic.
As far as the FDA goes, I have always held the belief that the F and the D needed to be separate entities as the D needs to be more closely related to the AMA.
Mainly in agreement with you, which unfortunately will prove to be a boring debate I guess. I think the Drug part should be completely handled by the AMA, and I think the Food section obviously should stay as it is.
Though, I saw a very disturbing documentary on e. coli and beef which detailed that there are only three main food sales establishments which test incoming shipments for e. coli before sales…. The biggest of the lot was Costco, and the other two remained un-named in the show…
I'd like to see tighter regulations on beef and proper testing for disease. I now buy almost all of my beef from costco because of that documentary… papadawg it was totally disgusting… if the beef is covered with cow feces the South American workers say they "do their best to wipe it off before it's packaged…."
As for the drugs, well honestly if you use steroids and heroine and other drugs which will undoubtely destroy your system with long term use you won't be much of a long term problem to society in the years to come. Alot of younger people are advocating the legalization of marijuana, stating its passive effects on the body compared even to moderate cigarette smoking and drinking.
I personally think it could bring in alot of extra tax money, and put a legalized stop to shady dealers on the streets. But thats another debate.

As for legalizing MJ and other so-called "soft" drugs, those young folks should see what I have seen in my years in law enforcement – Just my personal opinion. B)

Just my not-so-humble opinion. B)
