They don't deserve anything. If any of the ancestors are still alive who were enslaved, then that is a different story. However, money should not just be handed out to the descendants who haven't been through crap. I think that's why we have the welfare system established. I wonder what the ratio of African Americans to Caucasians is on that list.
No.
If we're going to start giving out money to people who were enslaved, we'd have to give money to descendants of indentured servants. Or hey, let's go farther back and you know, give money to the Irish and the Scots who were repressed by Britain.
I agree with Jared.
Just because someone's great great great grandfather was a slave does not give him or her any reason to expect some sort of apology money.
And I will go even further. There is no reason that any of us should have to apologize to any of them. I had nothing to do with their ancestors being enslaved. You had nothing to do with their ancestors being enslaved. Why should we apologize for the actions of our forefathers?
I say get over yourselves and move on with your life.
But again, that is just my opinion.
So, why are we giving native americans reparations?
Every civilization has a their sad story in their history, no one should be paid for theirs.
I have no opinion on this subject, since I am a descendant of an indentured servant. B)
Jared, Let me give you that ratio….
According to the statistics, whites form the largest racial group on welfare; half of all welfare recipients leave in the first two years; and teenagers form less than 8 percent of all welfare mothers
Race
————–
White 38.8%
Black 37.2
Hispanic 17.8
Asian 2.8
Other 3.4
Well, where exactly did you get that information from?
Also, whites are the largest ethnicity in the United States, so we should take a look at the percentage of whites on welfare out of the entire white race, and the percentage of blacks out of the entire blacks race on welfare.
Very important point. Since we claim to live in an enlightened society and have access to information that our ancestors did not have, we should be acting with more responsibility. The most important thing is to create an environment, which will provide equal access and opportunities to all human beings with no discrimination.
We must be conscious in our efforts, with checks and balances put in place to ensure that such atrocities never occur again. If one group of people offers monetary compensation to another 'oppressed' group, whose ancestors were the victims, this may not, in itself, remove barriers to equal opportunities that will allow people a fair chance to shape their lives according to their merits.
This business of claiming compensation for past injuries suffered by ancestors is an endless game. If we are honest, we can discover injustice and injuries committed by every human group at some point of history. Shouldn't we forgive and forget and move on.
Oh, now you're just reaching to find statistics that match your opinion…
AFDC facts and figures can be found all over the internet. I'm sure you can find a study somewhere that will suport your theory on blacks and welfare.
However, this debate isn't about welfare..
I don't believe a cash settlement should be given, but I do believe some type of tax deduction or financial education grant should be given to those who have gone or wish to attend college. I also believe the government should look into the land that was stolen from African Americans after the civil war and look into paying those descendents. Oh yeah, I'll move on when the Jews and Native Americans do the same.
I dont think anybody should get any cash money for reparations, but since education was denied to african americas for hundreds of years, which put them way behind in school, then I think the government should look at that problem and try fixing it.. Oh yea, you just cant say forget about slavery and move on. thats just ignorant. Slavery played a huge part in creating America.. But somehow we forget that.. SMH!
What land was stolen from African Americans after the Civil War?!?!?
I don't think the government needs to waste their time with this non-problem.
Sure, slavery played a huge part in our nation's history, but it's over. There is no more slavery. Any descendents of slaves that are living today need to simply get over it. I'm not trying to be callous. I'm just saying that those descendents themselves are not the slaves and they should not be asking for special treatment just because their great great grandpa was a slave once.
