This is a very sore subject for some of us, I'm not sure if I feel comfortable taking a position on this.
Yes, it is a tough one, and therefore I think it should remain a decision on the state level.
As a non-parent I would say yes, but I assume that as soon as I have children I will immediately reverse that position.
We are the states. Yes it should be more liberal. Innocent guys go to jail all the time for this.
But what about those who are guilty?
They will go to jail. Just because she's 18 doesn't mean anyone can do whatever they want. Consent laws say that if you have sexual relations with a girl underneath 18 years old, it's automatically statutory rape and the guy can automatically go to prison. If the guy raped her regardless of being 18, he's going to jail.
Depends on the state for the precise ages of consent. Also there's often some relation to how old each party is, not just a young girl under 18 say being automatically qualified as rape if someone has sex with her.
I do think there are specific laws which penalize pre-marital sexual relations (of any kind, not just intercourse) between consensual parties who happen to be teenagers. Those should be eliminated and most certainly not treated with the same level of scorn and official bureaucratic requirements as real sexual offenses like rape or pedophilia. Sexual predators are a completely different problem than consensual awkward sex between teenagers. One represents a danger and harm to others and the other is just uncomfortable for parents (and presumably the parties involved in many cases).
Although they say that it's not automatically qualified as rape, the chances of the guy defending himself definitely decreases, even if the guy is 18. You see this happen all the time in the news.
In the UK, the age of consent is 16. As a young person, I think this is a fair balance: it's young enough for people to wait if they want to, but old enough for people to be mature enough to make their own decision.
What is considered liberal? Justice Ginsberg thinks the age of consent should be 13. That is sick.
In past Human history there have been different levels of consent ages in each growing civilization. In the U.S., when we were just the colonies, it was acceptable for girls to marry as soon as they became of child bearing age. Boys also. The reason for this was the scarce population and the very high mortality rate among our population at the time.
As we Humans progressed into our currant modern times, the age of consent has been slowly climbing higher, even though our sexual desires have remaned the same.
There are still some states in the U.S. where the age of consent is as low as 13, but most now put it at 18.
I am the father of a daughter(now all grown up with children of her own) and I know how uncomfortable I was when we first let her start dating at age 16. I actually met her first date at the door with my shotgun in my hand – I had been cleaning it after a day of skeet shooting and her date arrived an hour early . . . Fact, not fiction.
Most young men would like the age of consent to be around 13, but parents would like it to be 30.
Get my drift?
This is a question that will never be answered easily, well not until parents start making their children aware of their sex organs and what they are used for, and teaching them about the awesome responsibility connected with the usage of their sex organs.
Anyway, that is my not-so-humble opinion.

Sorry, forgot to add great post! Can’t wait to see your next post!
If two 13-15 year olds say decide to have sex I don't have a problem with that.
I'd agree there might need to be an upper limit on how old the person a 13 year old chooses to have sex with is actually choosing to have sex within the context of their own autonomy. But I don't see how a 13 year old isn't capable of making that choice within the context of a mutual relationship, as dumb and pointless as it probably is.
It ought to be what the bible suggests and the states ought to come together and agree on the same age.
church and state?
You cannot base laws and restrictions of the government on the bible. You can't base them on ANY holy book. The United States of America has no state religion, Christianity is not the guideline of our government. Laws should be created based upon moral and ethnocentric values that give discretion towards our freedoms as humans.
that said, 13 is way too young in my opinion, 16 is still pretty young, but kids are pretty mcu at the age to do what they want anyway by then.
hey wrong!
thats stupid. im a teen, and my boyfriend is a teen, i dont think we're ready to do anything so we just dont but alot of my friends have gotten into a lot of bad stuff. they dont really care how "legal" it is, they just do it. plus you can buy condoms at any age. which makes sense, but is still kind of contridictory.
i know, by experiece that kids, if they want to, will do whatever they want to do. no laws will stop them. parents have to give their children advice that actually is logical and not just 'dont do it. youll die'
