I think they should be. There's no harm done.
This is something that we all need to think about, I mean do you really want that pilot who is stoned on medicinal MJ (legal now in a lot of states) packing a "Dirty Harry" .44 Magnum special at thirty thousand feet?
Isn't medicinal marijuana used to treat glaucoma? or some other eye disease? or pain management for cancer? Any of those conditions preclude you from exercising your pilots license. I think your scenario is a bit far-fetched there PapaDawg.
No it isn't. Check the various laws. In California it can be prescribed for "chronic discomfort" which means just about anything as long as you can get a doctor to write the prescription. And our wonderful and ever observant TSA does not have MJ on the "do not fly" list . . . . .
It doesn't have alcohol on it either. What's your point?
Besides, I've never heard of anyone becoming more violent because they were stoned in the first place.
You quite obviously have led a very sheltered life. I on the other hand spent my working life in law enforcement.
I do not hold it against you for not seeing the things I have, but that is why we spend our lives in between the good folks of society and the dregs of the Earth – to keep all of you safe from those who would harm you for no reason at all . . .
Yes I have seen many people stoned on MJ go off the deep end, just as I have seen many drunks do the same. Drugs of all kinds have different effects on different people.
So I asked my mom about this, and she says that she never say anybody on marijuana get violent. Just so you know, she grew up in a druggie home, and her parents and all their friends used drugs. A lot. Including marijuana.
Alcohol is, stastically, by far the more lethal and violence-inducing drug of choice…and they serve that on planes.
In any case, that all seems a bit irrelevant to the original question…. I think airline pilots should be able to be armed if they so desire. And I think that, in some cases, even the passengers should be allowed to carry guns. Not that a good teacher in karate wouldn't be as effective, but the option should be there.
But in any case. Yup.
No offense intended, but asking the fox to guard the hen-house is like asking a drug addict if it is okay to use drugs.
Not saying that your mom used drugs. I grew up in an alcoholic home and never saw anyone who was drunk get violent back then. However, even though I never kept count, in 30 years of law enforcement I have had my fill of drunken brawls and totally stoned idiots thinking they are the Incredible Hulk.
`Nuff said on that subject.
Personally, I have always held the belief that all law abiding citizens who have never been convicted of a felony should be able to carry a concealed firearm anywhere they go. Yes, for the first six months or so the streets would run rivers of blood, but then we would run out of gang-bangers, muggers, child molesters and rapists and life would be peaceful after that.
Enjoy your black Friday everyone!
Yes. … a very sheltered life in the suburbs where lots of people do marijuana. "With all due respect", you should really not presume that I don't know what I'm talking about. Besides, the pharmacological effects on people are pretty well documented medical facts and not subject to your anecdotal fears.
If you're dealing with just the THC/cannabis, and not mixed drugs or underlying psychological issues (something like say paranoid schizophrenia, which would make it pretty hard to be a pilot to start with), you're not getting somebody acting psychotic and "going off the deep end". What you're probably confusing here is mixed drug use with deep underlying psychological issues. Somebody on PCP or LSD is likely to think they're the Hulk. Somebody high on pot is very likely to eat like they are the Hulk.
Paranoia I've seen, yes. But paranoia is very different than violence. You'd probably have a pilot freaking out over all the dials and lights in the cockpit, but not so much shooting people. Probably very dangerous in its own way, yes. But not so much in the frenzied killer version that you're depicting here.
Think of 9/11. Those pilots were killed after the terrorists got into the seat of the planes. And it should also be kept a seceret because if any terrorists know they have a gun then they will hold someone hostage and make the piolets put the gun down and it will be 9/11 again except with guns!!!
