This is actually very similar to the condom distribution debate but obviously in a different context. Handing out clean needles to drug addicts to prevent aids is good for that reason.
However, on the other side of the coin we are giving out needles for drug addicts to use. Very sore subject for some, but ultimately I think we need to take baby steps. Drug addicts, especially those who are using needles for heroine, will not just stop using it with the flick of a wand.
I have to admit that on this particular subject I am very biased.
I have seen, first hand, the results of needle distribution for many years. It does not prevent the spread of aids, nor does it slow it down any. It does not even affect the hepatitus infection rate.
Why?
Addicts keep and re-use and share those needles. Addicts don't care about the spread of diseases. Addicts only care about getting their next fix – and that fix is the ONLY thing they care about!
Just my not-so-humble opinion!
I agree with you papadawg. You can't be funding these addicts with more supplies.
So even though they are getting clean needles, you are saying those needles will not even matter at all?
Yeah these addicts will not just stop using drugs right away.
Think it helps out a lot as far as preventing furtherance of disease.
No Sal, because that needle is only clean for that first use and then it is re-used and passed around to other addicts until it is so dull that no matter what they do it will not penetrate skin.
Addicts just do not care what happens to anyone or anything but getting that next fix.
So then how is this problem supposed to be fixed?
I would also imagine they are reluctant to go to rehab.
In my own opinion, I do not believe that it will ever "be fixed" for the simple reason that from the dawn of time there have been people who will do anything to get high.
Originally even alcohol was first used as a rat poison – and then some numbskull decided to see what happened when he drank it, and the rest is history.
Back during the 1960's there was an explosion in the use of all kinds of drugs. It has seemed to taper off in recent years, but there will always be those who want to ruin themselves in order to get high.
Absolutely not. As has already been stated, it really does little to stop the spread of disease and does nothing to encourage drug addicts to stop. This is definitely NOT something that our tax dollars should be spent on!
well lori they don't work as well because there are not enough of them. Did you know that we are one of the only countries that don't support NEP's, and we have evidence of them being effective in multiple other countries, not only that but effective in the USA. All that needs them to be more effective is federal funding which doesn't even have to come from taxes but pork barrel projects (useless projects, deamed so by the senate)
Its not about making them stop using drugs immediately its a process! It takes time for these things to happen but it is proven to after time slow the spread of blood born diseases and eventually lead the drug users to other prevention and intervention programs and treatment!!
it is not really about solving for the entire drug use isssue but really starting to get rid of the spread which we evidence if you ever ask for it, and not only that it saves money. it costs a lot of money to treat blood diseases such as aids that we could save a lot of money on health care that we can use else were and solve other problems. and not only that why the hell are you calling yourself papadawg
now against your arguments they don't just re-use these needles and share them, in fact the entire point of NEP's is to diminish Aids/HIV infection rates which is done by exchanging the dirty needles for CLEAN needles, so to stay safe they exchange the needles.
