Yes. Recent experience has shown that some doctors know exactly what they are doing, and others just don't fit the picture. You cannot play with people's lives.
It depends on what you mean by outside. There needs to be some accountability so patients are assured their doctors are qualified but persons or organizations who are not qualified do not need to be overseeing something they know nothing about.
Everyone does
One good rule of thumb about doctors- Don't go to a doctor that you have never heard of. We have always asked friends and reletives who they go to and if they like them.
We recently moved to another state and we asked those who we became friends with who they have for family doctors, then checked with our insurance to see if any of them were on the Insurance providers list. We wound up with a really good one who actually takes the time to talk to his patients and actually listens to us.
So, in closing, Sal is correct that everyone watches the medical profession.
Unfortunately, lawyers watch the most!
You are exactly right, we ALL watch the doctors and as long as their remains competition and choice bad doctors won't be able to thrive because patients will stop visiting them. Choice and competition, not the government will assure the highest quality of care every single time!
Find out where a doctor went to medical school also. Websites now display that information.
Yea, there's a lot of weirdos out there, who claim to be doctors or have many malpractice incidents.
It's not enough. When you want to go to the emergency room, you don't have time to find a good doctor. You trust that the doctor at hand is going to do everything he/she can in order to save you. I understand if you are talking about a pediatrician, but all other doctors, especially ones in the hospitals, should be very closely monitored. I understand they also get sued all the time, but if they were monitored, then all the bad doctors wouldn't make the mistakes, since they won't be given the opportunity to do so anyway.
Who do you suppose shall do this outside monitoring? You certainly cannot have anyone but a medical professional himself/herself doing the monitoring if the monitor is to proclaim when the doctor does right or wrong. That brings up a whole other issue – Doctors don't like calling out other doctors. Also, it's almost inevitable that doctors will be sued at some point in their practicing careers. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of bad doctors who make horrible mistakes. However, there are also plenty of bad lawsuits with no merit brought against physicians. So to pinpoint doctors in hospitals is unfair. If you want to monitor them, monitor all of them.
