Well first of all, who is going to tell them they can't?
Secondly, if it were possible, I wish they did not have it. I do not trust them with that sort of power with the possibility of mass destruction.
No they don't deserve that stuff. As a matter of fact, we should put some soldiers to patrol it or something and profit from it. That's exactly what we have to do.
Who is going to disallow them? The UN? Well, seeing as they've already ignored the UN multiple times, that's out. The US? Ha. We can't even patrol our own borders, much less make sure other people don't have weapons.
Personally, I don't see why not. It's progress. Get over it. It's much like the space race- we didn't want anyone to get into space then, for obviously self-serving reasons. The US needs to stop playing policeman and get over themselves and their superiority complex already.
I think traveling to space is a little bit more different than the possession of nuclear power.
We must also remember that Iran is a radical Islamic Theocracy who, by their own statements, want to "wipe Israel off the face of the Earth" – and that is a very dangerous statement indeed.
Nuclear power should be banned outright because it's an ecological disaster just waiting to happen. Its byproducts are lethal and we have no way to recycle them or even store them safely.
That said, as long as it exists, who is to say who can possess this technology and who can't. It seems highly hypercritical to me for those nations who currently possess a nuclear capacity to say that this or that nation can't as well. Who made them the final arbiter in matters of this sort?
In what way? Space has the potential to be used as a powerful weapon, and at the time I do believe that was one of the incentives for the space race- the strategic and tactical power of space.
But is it our (the US) place to 'send a strong message' to them? Who are we to be doing such a thing?
Nuclear power is one thing, and nuclear weapons is something entirely different.
However, if a country as radically inclined as Iran is wants to build breeder reactors, well, that can only mean thay are making weapons grade Uranium or weapons grade plutonium, and that cannot be a good thing at all. Do not look to the impotent U.N. to control them.
What is to be done?
I believe that need to be sent a message that they cannot help but to understand.
Just my not-so-humble opinion.
"He who lets the Genie out of the bottle is ultimately responsible for the actions of that Genie"
We wished for it without knowing what we wished for . . .
I believe that every nation that wants nuclear weapons should visit Peace Park in Hiroshima first.
We let the Genie out of the bottle.
Get my drift?
You are wrong. Nuclear power (for electrical generation) is the cleanest and safest way to produce electricity.
If the nuclear fuel is utilized properly and recycled properly, we currantly have about enough nuclear fuel to last approximately 10,000 years in the U.S. alone.
If you do not believe me, then google it.
The byproducts from the nuclear process have a shelf life of tens of thousands of years and they're lethal to all living creatures during this time. If you consider THAT to be clean and safe, then I will contact the gov't to let them know that they can store this crap in your garage and you won't complain a bit. I'm sure the gov't will be overjoyed to learn of this since they seem to meet with a lot of anger whenever they try to locate nuclear waste in local communities. That said, I don't think your neighbors will be very pleased!
who are we–since I presume we are emplied as the world police since we act like it–to tell anyone what to do? They are a soverign nation. We may not agree with their sentiments or methods, but they are a democracy. Are we to now move beyond simple democracy and mandate that all democracies become carbon copies of our own?
If they use it for peaceful means they have every right to attain nuclear power. In fact if they built a bunch of nuclear power plants they'd be far more advanced than America. How's that for a thinking point?
All of those “byproducts” you are so worried about already exist in the fuel for nuclear reactors. The reactors run on plutonium and non enriched uranium. When the reaction is complete and the fuel is spent (dozens of years) the remainder is plutolium with LESS radioactivity than it had when it was mined. Guess what, we can easily put it back into the mines where it came from, and it does less damage than it did when we pulled it out….
Coollant water from a reactor remains active for less than 24 hours before the radioactivity it was infused with dies out due to half-life efficiencies.
The power is clean, stable, and its free when harnessed properly.
How do I know this? Guess I must have served on a nuclear submarine in the Navy.
And if they want nuclear power, who are we to tell them no? Just because we had it first doesn't mean another soveregn nation shouldn't be able to research it's capabilities. I agree that I don't want to see them with nuclear ICBMs. BUT there is a huge difference between a reactor which makes power, and a nuclear weapon. The engineering tolerances for making a nuclear weapon which can actually detonate are ridiculously difficult. Nuke power on the other hand is a pretty simple venture.
I have no problem if Iran wants nuclear power. However, the fact remains that Ahmadinajed said he wants to wipe Israel off the map. Now since he said this, it would be wise for the whole world to think really hard about giving Iran nuclear power, since they arent the most trustworthy of nations.
It's not a question of giving them nuclear power- they are developing it. And if they do, there isn't much we can do about it. What are we going to do, nuke them in return?
Iran is no less or no more trustworthy than Israel or the U.S. or Russia. Israel practices apartheid and Russia and the USA have had their cold war and all have made statements about wiping out other nations. I don't get what the prejudice towards Iran is. Nobody wanted them to have a nuclear anything even before the statement about Israel was made. Israel, Pakistan and india have Nuclear weapons and they are some of the most unstable countries in the world in regards to their neighbors. So someone tell me on good reason why Israel can be trusted with nukes but Iran can't.
