I don't think so. That's cheating the system in a way. I think nonprofits should be paying taxes, like 5-10%, because even though they aren't trying to make profit, they are still paying people salaries and stuff.
It is my not so humble opinion that there should not be any sort of non-profit organizations, that all businesses should pay their fair share of taxes.
This includes the business of Religion. The moment Churches start to preach about who and what to vote for, they need to start paying taxes.
It is my not so humble position that no businesses should pay taxes and that government is an evil instrument of oppression.
I cannot discuss Somalia seriously without being accused of racism, so I will give you the win on this one.
Nonprofits still pay payroll taxes on those "salaries and stuff" that you're so worried about. So they are already paying "5-10%" and not "cheating the system".
Also, because of the tax code, they effectively pay taxes (to another industry) by having to employ accountants to make sure they are in compliance with the rules, for instance by being limited to what tasks they can and cannot perform and what they can use to generate revenues.
I'm in full agreement to get rid of business/corporate income taxes (though I'd probably change capital gains income to be taxed as regular income to compensate for this loss of revenues, and then cut the marginal income tax rates). All a "fair share of taxes" usually amounts to is higher prices or fewer people being employed (outside of accountants).
