Look, I have nothing against a prisoner trying to make some cash while in prison, but I don't want them handling any personal and confidential information. These corporations don't care about our personal information so they'll hire anyone who is the cheapest to pay out to, and unfortunately, this is prisoners and is also done by outsourcing, which is worse.
In Finland prisoners make almost all the traffic signs in the country. This has been found to be a good alternative to earn money and it's also very therapeutic. But working conditions should be regulated to be healthy and decent.
Morally, only if the income goes to the victim of the crime as restitution.
In the US, the Constitution clearly states that criminals can be used as labor.
1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. (Amendment 13 )
I agree with what Jared said, but I also think it depends on what the job is. I would rather see them doing a job, instead of just sitting around doing nothing, or having the luxuries of watching TV, working out, or just doing whatever.
I would also hope that these prisoners who have jobs, will also be able to have a better life on the outside, and to be able to hold a steady job, and make a life for themselves and actually to be able to go straight and stay straight.
Yes they should work, and no they should not necessarily get paid for it. I believe prison should be a punishment.
Given the Constitution allows for it, perhaps the issue isn't should prisoners work, but to whom should their pay, if any, go? To victims? This would then leave the prisoner broke upon release, and how would they get quick cash to set themselves up in society? Give the pay to the prison itself? This would then turn prisons into profit-seeking businesses, and arrests would have to keep up with labor demands. A complex debate indeed!
Yes, I think that prisoners should be able to work and receive a decent salary as there are plenty of prisoners that are unable to provide for their kids, or parents, or disabled partners.
Being in a prison is already a punishment…
Prisoners get paid also. Did anyone else know that? Like cents an hour for being in prison.
Yea but being in prison should mean that you can't work or have fun or make any money whatsoever. Why let them do that?
If the kids or parents or disabled partners can't afford to live, then that's what welfare and child services are for.
Yea, simple jobs like that which can be easily monitored would be fine, but nothing involving credit cards or personal information.
Yes, they should have a job like everyone else. They do a crime, and sit in prison with free room and board, food, cloths, college, free piblic attorneys, free appeals, gyms, etc… They should work and pay the state and tax payers back. Stop getting everything for free. I have a step daughter that keeps commiting fraud and sent to prison for 5 to 10 years and gets out in 1 to 2 years everytime. What the HECK. I'm not talking easy jobs either. no jobs that have contact with the public. They can train guard dogs, or for the handicap. A job that gives back to the people.
Jared, you are and idot. You have no contact with reality. Welfare and child services were not set up for them. It is for people that really need help. We should not be paying for the familys along with the prisoners. They can pull themselves upby the boot straps and get a job like the rest of us not live on welfare. Only the familys that are the victums should have access to that.
NO. In the south blacks were arrested for nothing and then used in chain gangs as effective slave labor in prisons. 'Letting' prisoners work isn't what this is about, because when someone has complete control over your life like a warden or a prison guard then 'letting' becomes "have to."
Andrewclunn, I think we are alittle smarter than that these days. No one is talking chain gangs. Plus if you do the crime, than you have no rights as far as working and paying back the people. Tell me why they should get all this stuff for free when they are in prison and we have to pay for all the things they get for free, and we commeted no crime. It looks like to me that it pays to be an inmate and it doesn't to be a law bidding person. Heck they even get MEDICAL for free. Where is the justice in that?
i think everyone would agree that America is a land of opportunity and part of that opportunity is the ability to work and make a living. However, when one steps outside of the law, they have also stepped outside of their rights as a citizen.
calling people idiots to their face in a debate because they believe something isn't cool, however crazy it is.
yes, i believe they should be working, not necessarily to earn money for themselves, but to pay back to the victims of their crime, restitution, and back to society for the trouble they've caused.
