No, that's ridiculous. It's a corporation name, that's all. Fans just have to deal with it.
Aren't most of them already? If they could fix 'Jazz' and 'Lakers' into things that would make sense, I think we'd all be happy with that. They can rename teams when they move (Oilers-Titans, Sonics-Thunder, Browns-Ravens) and I'd figure that'd be good enough.
New York Giants and New York Jets play in New Jersey.
Ahh that's what you're referring to.
I think they get more advertising revenue from being called "New York", and most of the NY media covers them anyway. I don't see people in NJ complaining that much as a result (more money for them). So who cares?
People who live in the towns they play in.
So people in East Rutherford are complaining that they get extra tax revenue and money because their team is titled "New York"?
All that means is that they are motivated by something other than long-term self-interest. I usually call this the "I'll see you in hell" phenomenon. Destroying capital to deny it to others even if you would receive more by simply allowing them to take a larger share.
The easy way to compare this is to ask this:
Would you rather have a 5% raise when everyone else is getting a 10% raise or would you rather have a 4% raise when everyone else gets 2%. I'd guess the motivation of a few NJ-ites is the second premise. Which is, quite simply, wrong.
I guess i agree with you there, but don't you think it is ridiculous for "new york" teams to have their homes in jersey?
If there was room (and cheap land) in NY for a new football stadium, it would be. There are a lot of teams (like the Cowboys example below) that play in the suburbs of some major city or the some outskirt community. I think most people know where NYC is. Start calling them the East Rutherford Giants and see what people do. Arlington Cowboys? Auburn Hills Pistons? Etc.
Also, Dallas Cowboys play in Arlington, Texas. Whatever though, it's America's team.
Professional sports teams are a business and should be able to name their team whatever they want to.
The Oakland Raiders moved to L.A. and became the L.A. Raiders for a while, then they moved back to Oakland and are now again the Oakland Raiders.
That is my not-so-humble opinion.
Pontiac Lions? Foxborough Patriots?
