I can see the Dr. needing it. I can see the bank needing it. But why should DMV need it? Here in Texas they ask for it and will make life miserable until you give it to them, BUT they are not supposed to and it is illegal. Not that they are going to arrest themselves, but I just can't come up with a valid reason the DMV needs my SS#.

Your doctor shouldn't need it at all (they are moving toward medical records numbers) and your bank shouldn't need it after you start an account. I'm not really sure it needs it before that. The use of the SS# is mostly laziness. They could very easily assign a consumer ID number to track credit transactions.

Your SSN should be protected at all times. The only people who need your SSN are your doctor, the DMV, and your bank.

If anyone else asks for it you should be suspicious.

Just my not-so-humble opinion.

Yea. It rarely is a problem for me, but you always have those one or two times when they ask for the number. I remember my teacher complaining about this in high school, and now I can actually say I've had an experience with it.

No reason at all why they need that number.

No it doesn't. But I am aware of dozens of consumer and industry driven arrangements to use different identification numbers other than a federally assigned public one that are already moving into place and available for businesses in some locations.

So the problem would be that wherever this is a problem is slow on the uptake.

For something that is not an issue to you may very well be to others. The world doesn't just revolve around you.

I don't know, we all have different situations. Did you ever think of that?

Well, at least in New York City, I've been asked a number of times to give my social security number just to get a discount on some products.
