I remember my religion teacher talking about this one. No, I don't believe one person should justify the rights of millions of others. What happens is one minority complains about how they don't want to see "Merry Christmas" and now all the stores want to put "Happy Holidays". It's a tradition, and traditions shouldn't be broken for one person.
As a matter of fact, I know a lot of religious figures who say their followers shouldn't shop at stores that change it over to "Happy Holidays" so I guess the loss is to the corporations.
Like it or not, this is a primarily Christian nation. Saying Merry Christmas is speaking to the majority. If someone said Happy channukah to me I would not be offended.
There are many, many celebrations that fall during the winter period. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_winter_festi… ) The Christian celebration of Christmas is only one. The major others are Hannukah, Kwanzaa, and the winter solstice. True, maybe the people are being a bit sensitive if someone says 'merry christmas' instead of 'happy holidays'- but aren't the Christians being a bit sensitive about this issue, as well?
Leave it up to the businesses themselves and the people they employ. They are private entities, not publicly funded operations. If you the shopper are offended by people demonstrating a singular preference for Christmas those last 6 months of the year that make up the Christmas shopping season, shop somewhere else.
Likewise if you are offended by people saying Happy Holidays (which seems really silly to me to get all that pissed about..but whatever).
I think the real issue is the chance you will offend someone and political correctness being shoved down our throats. If I say Merry Christmas and your offended because you celebrate Hannukah..1 how am I to know that? and 2–you being offended is your problem not mine. We are guaranteed freedom of speech not the freedom from being offended. Get over it!
Guess what? Here I go again . . . If a store displays one theme or another and you do not like the theme being displayed – suprise, suprise – No one is forcing you to shop there!
It all boils down to what YOUR personal preference is. If you do not like "Happy Holidays" then do not support that store . . . Shop at the stores that display YOUR personal preference.
That is EXACTLY what I do.
There is my not-so-humble opinion!
Exactly! It's up the businesses owners.
I don't care either way its meaningless.
I prefer Happy Festivus.
I don't care if it offends one Jewish person, keep it Merry Christmas. I'm sick of all these immigrants coming in the country, stripping it of all it's benefits and acting like they all should be able to break tradition.
Go back to your country if you do this.
Saying Merry Christmas is a tradition. I don't like the fact that they are going to be saying Happy Holidays from now on.
Yes, this is America, why should the we say Happy Holidays because the majority isn’t allowed to have an opinion. If you don’t like it then grow up. and why does everyone agree with each other on this site?
I hardly ever agree with you pusty! Do you no longer enjoy my witty reparte` and clashing ideas?
I do miss hearing Merry Christmas. I enjoy Christmas, I love the feeling of the season. For most people Christmas is kind of a national institution; if someone is saying Merry Christmas to you they are really just well wishing you as much as saying have a nice day.
But Americans bruise like over ripe apples now.
It should continue to be "Merry Christmas" Like it always has been.
I think people should be allowed to say whatever winter greeting they want. I, for one, do not get offended because someone didn't magically know what celebration I prefer.
What is the point of this argument? Let businesses say what they wish. Besides, "Christmas" is a NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED Holiday. If you get offended for hearing Merry Christmas, get out of a country that was originally settled (in part) by a group of Christians.
Depends if you want to offend 85% of your customers. The gift giving season is traditional to Christians because gifts were given at the birth of Christ. I know of no other holiday that stresses gift giving like Christmas does. Some merchants don't understand why their sales are down while others are up. I will not buy from any merchant that refuses to wish me a Merry Christmas.
I agree it is up to the business owners. I will know which stores say Merry Christmas and thats who will get my Christmas dollars. Merry Christmas to all.
and to all, a good night.
I just refuse to do shopping at any place that does not support "Merry Christmas"
The radical progressive liberals are doing everything they can to erase religion from our culture. When you shop at these stores that do not support merry christmas (yes it should be their choice) then you are giving them money to fund the efforts to erase faith….dont give them your money, dont do anything that does not support your political views…..watch what is going on in your country…..
Stores are private property. They can choose to say whichever they would like. Granted, "Happy Holidays" is less offensive, but ultimately it's their choice, not the government's and not ours.
And whose God would that be Albert?
Merry Christmas, and quite frankly I don’t care who I offended by saying that. It is a common phrase that no one should cry over. Those people just want something else to whine about.
Let the stores say whatever they wish to say.
Merry Christmas
Agreed Pusty
It's not a matter of whether or not stores SHOULD say either, but which one they WANT to? I mean, if a store or entreprise believes that saying "Happy Holidays" will increase their costumer satisfaction, then so be it. I work at a store that pushes "Happy Holidays", yet I continue to wish the costumers a "Merry Christmas". I have never once been told off for saying that. And If someone were to ever wish me a Happy Hannukah, personnaly, I would be thrilled, not offended.
Where I work I too say "Merry Christmas" and I have never once been attacked for it. On the contrary, I have been thanked by many customers for not abiding by the "Happy Holiday" rule.
I really don't understand some of these people who cannot decipher the difference between 'happy holidays' and 'merry Christmas', and frankly don't care. I think that it's a travesty on the face of American culture, that we raise our youth to believe in such single-mindedness and ignorance, in thinking that their one religion is superior to those of others.
I find the whole augment rather dumb. Truthfully I lean more towards “happy holidays” because I don’t celebrate Christmas. I don’t mind hearing merry Christmas though. Still I think if stores want to stop say happy holidays, workers should be able to say whatever they want. That means happy Yule, Kwanzaa, etc. Sure America is mostly christian, but if it was mostly Jewish should we stop listening to christians altogether? So enjoy the holidays, and stop worrying about people who may not agree with you. It’s really has no point.
)
Happy Holidays everybody
Christian zealots need to remember that Christendom hijacked the winter solstice celebration from the Romans, Greeks, and Babylonians hundreds of years ago. Jesus wasn't born in December, nobody decorated trees, and the only ones that gave gifts were the Babylonian astrologers led by a weird star with Herods Minions in tow. I do not celebrate, but if I did… I would just enjoy the celebration and not try to punish people for not bending to me, such as is the case with these over enthusiastic Christians wanting to boycott any store that says "Happy Holidays". Have Fun! Enjoy life! Rescue a dog! You will feel better!
merry christmas.happy christmas… I dont care who doesnt like it. Its what i have always known and what my kids know..
