This is my own personal opinion;
We are the custodians of our own bodies. We, and we alone, should make any and all medical decisions that affect only us medically. Therefore the government should NEVER have the ability to make any personal medical decision for us.
That is my answer to this debate it out question.
Most vaccines involve diseases that, if unchecked, can and will afflict other people. Sometimes hundreds or thousands of other people. Especially people who cannot receive vaccines for health reasons, but also perfectly healthy people who did receive a vaccine can become infected where the herd immunity problem is high enough.
That means there's some compelling externality cost that involves public risk, not just personal choice. In effect you are harming OTHER people by your choice and should be compelled to stop doing so in the case of many vaccines. Perhaps not flu vaccines, but most of the childhood diseases are preventable through vaccination and should be made so. HPV I'd agree is more of a direct personal ailment and not the same as getting a shot for polio or the measles. It does not rise to the same level. It should be optional, if perhaps "recommended".
