Yes. End of story.
By Law? No. But I doubt an immigrant could get elected.
By the Constitution of The United States of America.
FYI – That has been the law since we became an independent nation.
So tell me, just which country do you want to elect our POTUS? And no, I don't care what STS says – you ain't funny at all!
Who is it that asks these asinine questions?
If the Question said, "Does the President have to be…" then that would of course be the correct answer. However, it is asking, "Should the President be…" which means that we're not talking about what is, but what should be according to our own views.
I'm pretty sure he wasn't joking here, for once.
And I'd have to agree with his point, I don't see why this restriction should matter. It's unlikely that we'd have any citizens, who immigrated here after their birth, who would gather enough votes to be elected. Large numbers of people here hold strong nativist feelings regardless of any evidence of the powerful patriotic fervor held by most first and second generation immigrants for their new country. Certainly one who wanted to run for public office, just as they may want to serve their new country in the armed forces, doesn't strike me as someone we need to be worried about.
It's true it's a moot point, because it's illegal to do so for the Presidency. But we could also change this law someday.
Changing that law "someday" would amount to national suicide. The question of which country do you want to elect our POTUS from would then become a fact.
But then again, the supporters of a one world government would just love that, wouldn't they?
Actually, if you bothered to read my entire statement you would see that the problem isn't that likely to be a big deal.
Most people share your nativist convictions and wouldn't vote for some Austrian to be our President.
Simply allowing more people living as American citizens to run for office does not mean that the entire planet gets to vote on who runs America. You would also have to change that one too, which I do not propose to do.
Yes, the president should be a natural born citizen. Because you cant just give the power to anyone, they have to be all around American. All the other presidents were, so why should it end now?
