No. Why should we pay to help protect them when they broke the law?
Because it's your constitutionally given right, maybe? Everyone has the right to representation whether they can afford it or not. What about wrongly accused inmates who are attempting to prove their freedom?
In an ideal world, requiring the state to pay for everyone's legal representation would encourage legislators to keep the laws simple and understandable. Sadly we're much more likely to cut the expense than reduce the need for lawyers (mainly because so many politicians are former lawyers). I'm a big anti-government spending guy. I mean I'm very close to being an anarchist, but this, this is one of the few government expenses I support, because otherwise the government can just use legal complexity to price people out of justice.
It is already in the constitution.
Haven't you ever heard of the "Miranda" warning that all law enforcement has to read to each and every suspect?
Haven't you ever heard of court appointed attorney's?
And yes, those lawyers are paid by the state as long as they represent those clients – completely through the appeal process, no matter how long it takes.
Your question is a non-question, it is a moot subject.
