Absolutely not.

Maybe we can consider spending less on new nuclear weapons once our current one expires, but to significantly reduce it now is dangerous. People are under the blind assumption that if we remove our nuclear weapons, Iran and NK will remove theirs, but it's truly quite the opposite. Nuclear weapons are necessary for defense as they are deterrents. They force the world to be more diplomatic.

I'd rather have it exaggerated most of the time than under-rated.

No, well if there's anyone who I would trust with all of these weapons, I'd say the United States would be the winner. You need to have the big missiles and guns so no one else tries something pretty. Out of all the governments in the world, I'd trust the United States the most. All it takes is one of those no-good leaders in other countries to get smart and blow something up. Having all these weapons will make sure no one tries anything smart.

Unfortunately, from the Naval perspective, Congress has already started doing this. They cut 4 subs out of the 18 submarine nuclear missle fleet. So now there are 96 less ICBMs protecting the US from the undetectable platforms of submarine safety.
The point of the missles now aren't to fire them as much as they are a strategic deterrent. We can shoot down almost anything thats coming at the country (missle-wise I mean). But those subs, and those silo's in the mid-west, and those big wing bombers, thats strategic deterrance.

For once Sal got it right.

Why hog-tie the 500lb Gorilla that you keep around for your national security?

Rember - there is no such thing as a "level playing field" in war.

Juat my not-so-humble opinion. B)

Yes, but not suddenly. The slow disarming that we do ever few years with the Russians is working just fine. Slowly bringing down the number of nuclear weapons on both sides. And nobody else really has a huge number of nukes anyways. This is one of those things where I'm actually very pleased with how the situation is being handled. :D
