That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, discrimination in any form is bad so why would this be acceptable? If you want diversity, have others apply to your school and if they meet the requirements then sure, let them in.
Take it easy Brock. If you have the grades and qualifications then no one is saying anything about it. However discrimination should not be used to delete the competition. That discrimination will always come against white males should that be the case.
I like how you men argue, but women are the one who really get the benefit of the doubt out of situations like this! No one ever even thinks of that.
You deserve a chance if you work for it.
Yeah now we'll talk about discrimination against white males, give me a break you don't even know what your saying.
You don't even know me so I'm curious as to how you can make a comment like that.
It totally agree. Discrimination in never positive. We need to base acceptance on skill and ability alone. I am positive that there will be plenty of diversity if we do that.
Well the word positive makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, but the word discrimination makes me feel sad. Seriously though if you call it "affirmative action" then a lot more people support it. Crazy how much word play matters when it comes to people justifying their positions.
No. There should be no discrimination. They shouldn't even ask what race you are. It doesn't and should never matter.
No what are you saying? Are you implying it is okay to have no diversity at colleges? If so that is total bull. Others deserve a chance of having an education.
But it should matter if you're Indian or Chinese apparently.
Leave it up to the individual.
If the individual meets the academic requirements, then that individual should be able to apply.
If the school has only so many openings, then the school should take new students from the top of the application list.
If the individual wants to attend that school, then that individual should study very hard and make sure that he/she is near or at the top of the list.
It is the only way to be fair, it is called competition.
Just my not-so-humble opinion.
If the world was a perfect place, then yes that would be the ideal method. However, it is far from perfect and colleges need to look socially diverse so others cannot point the finger at them and call "racist"
but how is it the college's fault that the person didnt work hard enough to get accepted on any basis besides the color of their skin. just because someone is part of a minority race does not mean that they should get special treatment. if my sat score and my gpa is higher then theirs and the college has to choose between us i would hope that they would pick me because i am more qualified and not them because they are a minority race
the last part didnt sound right i meant that the minority race shouldnt get accepted just because they are a minority race im trying really hard not to sound racist because im not i just think that everyone should have equal opportunities so "positive discrimination" or "affirmative action" whatever you want to call it shouldnt be used because the opportunities are no longer equal
Yea, I understand what you are saying. That's the way we live though. It's unfair, I know that. That's why the government should step in and stop all these racism tactics to get people in through the system.
Everyone should be treated equally.
It depends. Equal rights to admission? I believe in that. Equal rights to a teacher geared for your learning style? I also believe in that. NOT SO MUCH DIVERSITY OF LEARNING STYLE IN A GIVEN CLASSROOM. Otherwise, you are making some students suffer because they are not learning in the way best suited to them. DIVERSITY OF LEARNING STYLE OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM? YES, by Heaven.
I don’t like it when people play the race card, i find that its swung too far now and minorities are taking advantages of it.
In the work force my uncle was denied a job he went to college for, for three years because a minority who had no training at all got the job.
Not to mention in Canada the natives that stay at home for life, living off the huge government handouts that they get from the guilt of the government.
The point is that the race card is just bad as discrimination.
I don’t apologize if i have somehow offended anyone.
To all posts. The truth of the matter is that the low income minority will be stuck there if colleges don't help to change this situation. Low income equals sub-par schools. That is a fact. I know plenty of hard working minorities making half the amount of their counterparts. As a woman who went to college (both my parents first language was not english), worked with WHITE men who knew less than me but held higher positions. The industry was white male dominated and enforced their power to elevate their kind. Wake up and realize that we live in a world where the color of your skin, unfortunately affects your situation. And the amount of money your parents make affect the education you get. The country needs to make education equal across the board than maybe the SAT scores will level out.
Please, stop living in the past, the playfield has swung too greatly towards those that are not white, and not male. Equality means equal rights which has been more than implemented, just focus on working hard, and stop making excuses if you fail, just get back up and try harder.
And you’d better not call me racist, every time a white man disagrees with a minority he’s presumed racist.
Holy Crap! For once I agree with Jared! There should be no discrimination for school/job/any type of application. There should be no affirmative action, there should be no query of your ethnic background in any application whatsoever. People should be accepted into organizations/jobs based completely on their merit, not in an effort to fill a quota because we need more minorities in our school. Everyone should have an equal chance to succeed regardless of race.
Now I’m not racist (I cannot stress that enough) But what you speak of (LordTiberivs) is almost exactly what is happening in my homeland, and it’s truly a shame. Native Americans that barely graduated are handed jobs to fill a quota. While the hard working majority who spend time and money to go to university to learn how to properly perform the job. It’s this spoon feeding that leads many of these people to tend to be lazy, and not perform well doing their job. But don’t try firing them because they’ll sue for racism.
This is one instance where I greatly envy Americans, who had the guts to allow Native Americans to stand on their own feet, and not spoil them like an only child.
I wasn't aware that there was an issue of native americans in Canada. I must admit that Canada is a blind spot in my political and historical knowledge. I really think to move towards being a more equitable society job/school applications should have the race/ethnicity queries removed from them again. I assume Canada uses this procedure for interview screening also?
If you are a native in Canada
a) You will have to pay very little taxes
b) You will recieve montly handouts from the government monthly, (enough to live off of, which is what many natives do)
c) You will have your entire secondary education paid for in full, (Forunately not many do this because of d))
d) You will likely be handed jobs, by employers who have to fill a quota (this happended to my uncle)
e)Your reserve will recieve a fortune in tax payers money to fund their reserve
f) You may live in a reserve that is self governed.
e) For every child that you have, you will recieve a substantial bonus.
Once again, I am not racist, (I know many natives who are great people) I am merely stateing the facts, what you decide to take from these facts is up to you.
