The French, it seems, are pretty good at losing battles and wars and handing the mess off to someone else. But since this all happened way back during my misspent youth - as I said, it is a moot point. In order to make it a debatable topic, I think someone needs to show us how this all affects us in the 21st Century. Just my not-so-humble opinion. B) It is a moot point.

However, the FLN was a very strong terrorist organization, who in fact did blow up buildings. The thing with the French was during this time was the tough loss in Vietnam leading up to this, and they did not want to be embarrassed again. Although they ended up losing again. This is a long and extensive topic that has many facts that could be applied here, but for the purpose of simplicity in the comment I'll stick to those two facts.
