The punishment should be cleaning up the oil spill and having .25% of their corporate profits donated to a wildlife fund.
Not realistic. There are such things as unavoidable accidents.
No punishment as we users of oil (and we all use oil each and every day) are the demand that they respond with the supply to.
A better idea would be to have all offshore drilling companies contribute to a cleanup and control fund managed by a different entity like the U.S. Coast Guard who would have a list of available cleanup companies who would be paid to do the dirty work. In the past there used to be companies who would respond to gushers and oil well fires on land. Why not have them for offshore drilling and oil well mishaps as well? In this sick economy it would provide much needed jobs world wide.
Cleaning up the mess. You break it you bough tit sort of thing. There should be no additional penalties, simply being held accountable for paying for the clean up is enough. Oh, and no caps on liability. That's the dumbest thing I ever heard.
Not so much papa
There should not be any punishment. The recent oil spill in the gulf is the fault of the incompetentence and excessive regulation or the federal gov’t. The EPA needs abolished as well they are completely useless.
