Guns are what this country is based on.
It is my personal belief that every law abiding adult in this country should be allowed to carry a loaded concealed firearm anywhere.
Having said that, I will answer the question as posed; Gun use in this country is not excessive and that fact is due to our second amendment rights.
Gun related crimes are excessive. However, that could be very easily remedied by allowing my first statement to become a reality.
Just my not-so-humble opinion.
Because people have too many damn guns and far too many Americans have little, if any, impulse control. The latter reason actually is more important than the first because, on a per capita basis, Canadians own as many guns as we do. The difference is that they don't shoot each other with them!
In general, Americans are more prone to the need for instant gratification. If we have a problem, why work it out when you simply can shoot the other person? This is the way our government behaves — internationally and domestically — and this mentality trickles down to permeate the whole of society.
Personally, I think we should collect all the guns in private ownership and melt them down. We could then create a statue dedicated to all the people killed because of gun violence.
Ever heard of a drive by knifing?
Okay, so how about each American only being allowed to have one gun.
That doesn't solve the problem of instant gratification. One gun can be just as deadly as twelve.
I just think you are making too much of a generalization with the American people. You are making it appear that every American is so impatient that shooting someone is the best option.
You are wrong again! Nowhere in this country has our government ever just lined people up for execution like your erroneous statement infers!
I have spent my adult life in law enforcement. Read my above statement.
Homicides are committed by any means at hand. Not just guns! Not long ago in Chicago a young man was beaten to death with a two by four and the crime was put out on youtube!
Since you have a computer, I suggest that you access the United States bureau of statistics on violent crime. You will find that more people are killed by automobile each and every year than by guns.
“An armed citizen is a citizen, an unarmed citizen is a subject.”
I am a citizen . . . Which are you?
Less guns will create less violence.
You need to become a better student of history. It would help if you would learn to dig below the surface into the underbelly.
An armed citizen is an armed citizen and an unarmed citizen is an unarmed citizen.
Sorry Jared… Simply not true.
It is far clear in the history of the world that an unarmed populace is easily controlled by a tyranny in power whereas a better armed population can always thwart an excessive government which wishes to enslave its subjects. Ever wonder how Germany, Soviet Union and China came under tyrannical rule you twit?
I've read my history, now I suggest you read yours. And BTW, before I go, I want you to look at the statistics of any country that allows guns bar the United States; it clearly shows how those countries which allow access to firearms are the countries which also have the least number of crimes. Don't be afraid..in fact it's so easy, and it starts with google..
Guns don't kill people, people kill people. If they don't have guns, then they will find some other way to kill.
Interesting hypothesis. Except there are countries with high gun ownership per capita roughly equal or more than the US and they have less violence. Switzerland or Canada for example.
So it's not a very good hypothesis.
Perhaps a good place to start in order to answer this would be by defining "excessive" and the conditions that it is implying.
My own theory would be that we could start cutting down whatever this problem is by legalizing or decriminalizing the drug trade such that drug dealers do not have to arm themselves against their competitors (and authorities) and fight over market share with blood and bullets instead of using clever or annoying marketing campaigns like any other business in the country. This would severely curtail random acts of violence and shootings. Though by no means will it abolish their causes.
