There are amazing amounts of resources yet untapped. And by the time we really need to worry about terrestrial resources we'll be able to harvest them elsewhere. Dwindling resources are one of the last things I'd be concerned with right now.
You need to find another institute of learning – the one you are in has failed you rather miserably.
Over the history of mankind, resources have changed as mankind has evolved.
Take oil for instance. First it was whale oil that burned and gave us light to see in the nighttime and burn our enemies. Now for the last several centuries it has been petroleum, of which we have found so many uses for that we virtually now cannot exist without it. Not to worry, though, since we have discovered that petroleum is carbon based and we now can create our own petroleum through carbon manufacturing. Isn't science wonderful?
