I sure hope so. It is probably our biggest threat. There are many diseases which you can prevent like STDs, but cancer is one that is hard to find a cure for, and one that is hard to prevent.
I have lost many people to this disease and I wonder how close we really are to a cure? It begs the question that even if we were, how many stand to lose too much from having this dreadful disease eradicated? Not sure humanity's needs ever really come before profit.
There are a lot of those people out there Angela, who just care about the money. However, I assure you that there are doctors who are above that.
Whoever comes up with a cure for cancer will have as many profits as they desire. Even moreso than treatment provides today. Therefore, profit does not create a road block for a cure.
Nah, doctors find treatments all the time and they don't get royalty fees at all. It shouldn't be about the money when it comes to finding cures.
Please provide an example treatment that cures something that didn't provide rewards. It isn't about the money. It is about providing a needed service. The money comes naturally as rewards for success should.
That's what I just said. These doctors who come up with ways for treating certain types of cancer don't have patents and other doctors just copy off of them.
I believe that to be a strawman. That is why I asked for an example. Can you provide one?
A strawman?
Something you created out of thin air without facts that you use to tear down to attempt to prove your point. In other words, I think you don't have any facts to prove your point.
You were responding to my point? Which one?
Your inquiry about strawman.
Probably this one: "Nah, doctors find treatments all the time and they don't get royalty fees at all".
There are such things as intellectual property rights. They don't get "royalty fees", sure, but they do get university appointments/tenure, can run training and licensing programs so other doctors can copy and even improve on their techniques, publish scholarly works, receive research grants… .
Yes. That is Jared's strawman…doctors that don't get rewarded for coming up with treatments/cures. He created this to say that profits will not drive cures. And no facts were given to back him up.
I guess so. I never thought about it that way.
Prostate cancer is one of the most painful ones I heard. It's very upsetting know how another human being has to go through something like that. They say that embryonic stem cells could also help fight it.
There are at least three areas of research that I know of that are getting very close to getting a handle on cancer cures. The main problem is that there are so many different cancers out there, and it seems that new ones are popping up on a daily basis.
1) Sonic technology. Prostate cancer has been dealt a serious blow with the recent success of killing the cancerous tumor with sound similar to ultra sound.
2) Nano technology has had some success with lab animals, although very limited I might add. If this technology ever gets a major breakthrough we will all hear the mass cheering.
3) And finally nuclear technology. Certain kinds of brain cancer has been completely eradicated in the patient after only a few short treatments with a new technique that allows the point-focus of certain types of radiation without the destruction of healthy cells and without the necessity for chemo therapy.
These are just a few of the many cancer research areas that are in the works today.
Yes, I do believe that there will be a cure for cancer coming soon. Just how soon depends on whether we can keep our free market economy vs the government run economy that most people seem to want to replace it with. Only a free market system provides for the competitive base that propels successful research.
Just my not-so-humble opinion.
Yes, there will be a cure for cancer one day but only if we address some of the hangups that stop us from achieving that goal- namely the general cultural hostility to genetic science and understanding (eg 'we shouldn't be tampering with nature').
We also have to challenge the idea, which I have heard from some people, that eradicating cancer. as well as other diseases, will somehow create a 'burden' on resources, what with all of us living longer and more productive lives.
The issue is certainly not 'public versus private' research. It's an issue of willpower and the universal desire to eradicate human suffering, regardless of whether it's 'sustainable' or not.
Embryonic stem-cell research is probably an example of this. People think a group of cells are human beings, while we could use these cells to help cure and grow stuff that can save the lives of those closest to us.
I certainly hope there will be but it is doubtful.
Embryonic stem cells do not fight that kind of cancer. All embryonic stem cell research does is kill unborn humans.
I have several friends who have had prostate cancer and none of them knew it until the tests came back positive.
This sonic treatment has shown the most positive results and is currently being licensed by the FDA and AMA for use here in the United States. FYI – If Obamacare passes this type of treatment will be scrapped. Don't believe me? Read the bill.
Jared, I know that you are an intelligent young man. So why do you continue to buy the lie that we must kill unborn Human Beings in order to save lives? That kind of thinking is what the NAZI's did back in 1930's Germany when they used people as lab rats. Is that what you really want?
Just curious, when is it that YOU think we actually become Human?
What I do know is that America has the greatest hospitals in the world. The greatest cancer hospital is in Manhattan, not too far from where I live. I may have some doubts about the healthcare system that we have now, but I know that embryonic stem-cell research hasn't even had a shot at developing in the United States. Bush pulled the funding, and doctors who even think about exploring this field are being mocked and looked down on.
I think we are going to see tremendous progress in the health industry because of this. There are people out there who need help and the possibilities are endless with embryonic stem-cells.
I have no doubt that you will always buy into the lie without even looking at what adult stem cell research has given us.
BTW – You still haven't answered the question; When do YOU think we become Human Beings?
I happen to believe that it is at conception – the moment the sperm and the egg merge.
They haven't even had a chance to test with embryonic stem cells. The first FDA-approved experiment was at the end of Summer 2009.
I don't believe it is conception. I believe it's a little further into it, when you can see the human form. Embryonic stem cells have been proven to be much more effective than adult stem cells. Scientists can do a lot more with them.
You will see the effect that it will have on our medical system.
Yes and I am waiting to see the results of that experiment.
